Program Note
I first met Harry in the Contemporary Players Ensemble at the University of British Columbia, where I had the pleasure of collaborating with him on my trio piece, As I walk along the same path, written for alto saxophone, trombone, and cello. Even before I began composing, I knew I wanted the piece to open with a saxophone solo, drawn to his warm and expressive playing.
When he later asked me to write a piece for saxophone and piano, I was thrilled at the opportunity to work with him again. I am deeply grateful for his commission and for the inspiration behind when all else falls away, a piece shaped by our conversations and the poem The Invitation, which Harry introduced to me.
During one rehearsal, he shared his personal story— his drastic transition from a consulting career to pursuing music professionally. I was impressed by his courage and the way he chose to follow his heart despite the uncertainties. It made me reflect on the forces that sustain us through life’s transitions—the passions that remain within us.
“I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.”
